A 1987 graduate, Newton was a men's track and field All-American in the high jump as a senior and started at center for the men's basketball team as an upperclassman. He earned All-America honors (top-eight finish) at the NCAA Division III national championship in 1987 with a 6-8, fifth-place high jump, and in 1986 he won conference with a 6-8 high jump. He became the first Bluejay to high jump 6-10 in 1987. In basketball, he average 13.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game over his 42-game career, shooting 48.5 percent (244-for-503) from the field.
