A three-sport athlete for the Bluejays, Hughes was a major contributor to the Bluejay volleyball team that won the 1998 CCIW Championship. She earned first-team All-CCIW honors during her senior year while earning honorable mention status as both a sophomore and junior.

She ranks third in Elmhurst College history in total digs (1,635) while also ranking fourth in total service aces (567) and 10th in total kills (906). She also appears in the single-season record book, ranking third in total digs (567) and fourth in digs per game average (4.54). She appears three times in the top-ten in single season service aces including fourth place with 80 aces.

Hughes also starred on the basketball court for the Bluejays where she was a three-time All-CCIW first-team selection who led the league in scoring twice.

Her name is carved into the women's basketball record book. She holds the career record for games played (99) and field goal percentage (55.8). She ranks second in total points (1,740) and field goals made (709). She also ranks third in made free throws (314) and total rebounds (882).

She has the third-highest single-game performance by scoring 27 points in a game. She appears three times in the single-season top-ten in scoring, her highest total of 570 ranks third. Hughes, who also competed in the throws for the track and field team, was also a star in the classroom, earning All-CCIW Academic selection four times.
