Bender also held a school record in the 100-yard dash (9.7 seconds) which stood for over 25 years. He was named Elmhurst's Male Athlete of the Year for 1958-59. In 1960, he repeated as CCIW Champion in the 220 dash. A two-sport athlete, Bender also lettered for the 1958 football Bluejays as a halfback.
