Box Score HANOVER, Ind. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal deficit to force overtime, but the Bluejays came up short in extra time, falling 9-8 to Hanover College.
Hanover (9-3) raced out to a five-goal lead by scoring four times in the opening quarter and adding a goal just 42 seconds into the second quarter. Elmhurst closed to within three goals before halftime as the Bluejays outscored Hanover 3-1 over the final 14 minutes of the first half.
Drew Wassenaar scored with 13:34 left before Hanover's Derek Coe scored to put the Panthers back up by five with 10:42 left. Elmhurst's
Matt Westhaver and
Mal Euson both scored before the end of the quarter to make the score 6-3 in favor of Hanover at halftime.
The Bluejays opened the third quarter with three straight goals to even the score at six. Wassenaar scored on a man-up opportunity with 9:22 left. Four minutes later, Wassenaar scored his third goal of the contest to bring Elmhurst to within one.
Jackson Mandli fired home a goal just 1:21 later to knot the score at 6-6.
Hanover's Josh Green scored late in the third quarter to put the Panthers up 7-6, but
Connor Ryan cashed in on a man-up opportunity early in the fourth quarter to pull Elmhurst even. Luke Karnick put Hanover back in front with a man-up goal with 6:50 left to play. Wassenaar sent the game into overtime as he netted his fourth goal of the game with just 46 seconds left in regulation.
Green scored the game-winner for Hanover off of an assist from Coe with 2;25 left in overtime to give the Panthers the win.
Wassenaar paced Elmhurst with four goals, marking his third straight game with four or more goals.
Alex Opyd added three points on three assists for the Bluejays. A. J. Weiger totaled eight ground balls and three caused turnovers in the loss.
Tyler York took over in goal for the Bluejays and played well, surrendering just three goals in 40 minutes while recording eight saves.
Green scored three goals to lead Hanover in the win. Karnick added three points with two goals and an assist. Addison Sears earned the win in the cage for the Panthers, allowing eight goals while recording 11 saves.
Elmhurst (3-6, 2-3 MLC) outshot Hanover 40-36 and had a 43-41 advantage in ground balls.
The Bluejays travel to Carthage on April 9.
