Bluejays Come Up Short Against Benedictine

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team had its three game-winning streak snapped after three fourth quarter goals propelled Benedictine to an 8-6 win over the Bluejays.

The second half was a tale of two quarters after Benedictine (7-3, 3-1 MLC) carried a 5-3 lead into the game's final 30 minutes. Elmhurst quickly sliced the two-goal deficit down to one as

's shot rang off the post with 1:15 left to play. The Bluejays scooped up the ground ball, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Eagles with lefss than a minute to play. Benedictine's Andrew Zmijewski put the game out of reach with 23 seconds left to play, breaking through a double team and racing in front of the cage and scoring.

Elmhurst scored the game's first goal just 1:20 into the contest as Mal Euson fired home a goal off a Jackson Mandli assist. Benedictine came back with back-to-back man-up goals to take a 2-1 lead. Berg scored off a feed from Link with 8:45 left to even the score and Zmijewski scored just 1:40 later to put Benedictine up 2-1. Mandli stuffed home his eighth goal of the season with 1:49 left to even the score at 2-2 after one period.

Benedictine scored two quick goals in the second quarter to go up 4-2. Zmijewski scored his second of the game just 2:30 into the period and Link scored three minutes later to give the Eagles a two-goal cushion. Wassenaar fired home his first goal of the game with just 25 seconds left in the half, but Benedictine won the ensuing faceoff and Blake Keenan blasted home a goal from 20 yards out to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead at the half.

The game was nearly even on paper as Benedictine outshot Elmhurst 32-27 and had a slim 29-28 edge in ground balls. The two squads were even on faceoffs with each squad winning 9-of-18 attempts. Both teams were successful on 17-of-18 clearing attempts

Wassenaar followed up his five-goal performance against Fontbonne with four goals to lead the Bluejays in the loss. Mandli added two points with a goal and an assist. Nick Bonastia made the start in goal for the Bluejays and took the loss, allowing eight goals and recording eight saves and seven ground balls.

Zmijewski led the Eagles with three goals and an assist. Jeffrey Smitheram picked up the win in net for Benedictine, stopping nine shots while allowing six goals.

Elmhurst (4-5, 2-2 MLC) plays at Hanover College on Saturday, April 5.
