Bluejays Win Double Overtime Thriller at Hendrix

Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - Nick Klenck scored with 1:24 remaining in the second overtime to lead the Elmhurst men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 7-6 win over Hendrix University.

Elmhurst (3-4) overcame a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and then scored the game winner in the second overtime after Hendrix scored in the final seconds of regulation to force the extra time.

The Bluejays built a 3-1 lead in the first half as Jackson Mandli tallied two goals and three points to lead the Bluejays' attack. Mandli fed Klenck for a goal midway through the opening quarter to put the Bluejays up 1-0. Hendix evened the score 11 seconds later on Jason Blatt's goal. Mandli fired home a shot with 3:03 left in the opening quarter to put the Bluejays up 2-1. Mandli netted his second goal of the game with 4:47 left in the second to give Elmhurst a 3-1 lead at the half.

Hendrix (6-5) took control early in the second half, ripping off four straight goals to build a 5-3 lead. Caron Boone scored a pair of goals in the third and TK Shaffer added another to put Hendix up 4-3 after three quarters. Blatt netted his second goal of the game just six seconds into the fourth quarter to give Hendrix a two-goal cushion.

The Bluejays surged back as Drew Wassenaar ripped home a shot off a feed from Mandli to cut Hendrix's lead in half with 5:01 left. Wassenaar fed Mal Euson for the game-tying score with 3:44 left.

The Bluejays moved on top with just 21 seconds left to play when Euson fired home a pass from Matt Westhaver to cash in on a man-up opportunity.

Elmhurst won the faceoff after the goal, but a turnover led to Travis Rabun scoring the game-tying goal for Hendrix with just five seconds left.

The Bluejays came out strong in the first overtime, outshooting Hendrix 3-0. Westhaver nearly ended the game for Elmhurst when he ripped a shot of the post.

With the score still tied after the first overtime period, the Bluejays had to kill off a penalty midway through the period. After the penalty kill, Mandli fired a shot that was saved by Hendrix. Alex Opyd scooped up the ground ball and fed Klenck for the game-winning goal.

Elmhurst outshot Hendrix 32-31 and totaled 39 ground balls to Hendix's 32.

Mandli led Elmhurst's attack with two goals and two assists. He fired 10 shots, putting eight on net while also scooping up a pair of ground balls. Klenck and Euson added two goals apiece while Wassenaar finished with a goal and an assist. Tyler York recorded 14 saves and eight ground balls in goal while earning his second straight victory.

Blatt and Boone paced Hendrix with two goals apiece. Rabun added a goal and assist to finish with three points. Christian Wheeler recorded 11 saves in goal for Hendrix.

Elmhurst resumes MLC play on March 29 by traveling to Fontbonne University.
