Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst lacrosse team slipped to 1-4 on the season after dropping its Midwest Lacrosse Conference opener 16-4 to Aurora University.
Aurora (1-3, 1-0) scored the game's first 13 goals en rout to the 12-goal victory. After receiving first quarter goals from Max Obriecht, Justin Bose and Zachary Olsen, the Spartans blew the game wide open in the second quarter, outscoring Elmhurst 9-0 en route to a 12-0 lead at the half.
Jordan Williams scored three of the Spartans' nine goals in the quarter while Danny Koziol added a pair of goals. Pat Diorka, Bailey Smith, Jack Barry and Nolan Miller also found the back of the net for the Spartans in the second quarter. Already leading 7-0, Aurora closed the half with a flurry of six goals in the final three minutes, including three goals in the final 1:05 of the quarter.
Danny Loyal scored early in the third quarter to give the Spartans a 13-0 lead, but the Bluejays' offense came to life with three straight scores. Elmhurst took advantage of a two-man advantage as
Drew Wassenaar cashed in on an
Alex Opyd pass midway through the quarter to put the Bluejays on the scoreboard.
Matt Westhaver scooped up a loose ball and raced in on a breakawy for his fifth goal of the season to make the score 13-2 after three quarters.
Tyler Dailey netted his first goal of the season for the Bluejays early in the fourth quarter before Ryan Stow and Williams added goals for the Spartans.
Jackson Mandli scored his third goal of the season fort he Bluejays with 3:33 left to play and Aurora's Obriecht scored the game's final goal with 1:09 left on the clock.
The Spartans outshot Elmhurst 42-22 on the contest, with 16 of their 42 shots finding the back of the net (.381 shots percentage). Aurora also won 16-of-22 faceoffs and totaled 36 ground balls to Elmhurst's 26. The Spartans were successful on 8-of-10 clearing attempts while the Bluejays converted 6-of-11 tries.
Ben Courtright and
Nick Klenck recorded four ground balls apiece for the Bluejays in the loss.
Nick Bonastia recorded nine saves in the game's first 30 minutes.
Tyler York played the second half in net for Elmhurst and recorded five saves while allowing four goals.
Williams scored four times to lead the Spartans' offense. Obriecht added five points on two goals and three assists while also winning 14-of-16 faceoffs and scooping up 11 ground balls. Adam Holka played the first half in net for Aurora and recorded three saves while not allowing a goal. Cameron Brooks played the second half and totaled six saves while allowing four goals.
Elmhurst continues MLC play on Saturday, March 22, by hosting the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
