Lacrosse Team Downed By Adrian

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst lacrosse team fell to 1-3 on the season after suffering a 14-4 loss to Adrian College.

After a close first quarter, Adrian (2-1) broke the game open by outscoring Elmhurst 9-1 over the next game's next 30 minutes en route to the 10-goal win.

Adrian scored the game's first three goals as Eric Fannell, Mitch Burgin and Brendan Harvey all scored within the first six minutes to put the Bulldogs on top 3-0. Elmhurst answered back with back-to-back goals from Alex Opyd.

The Bluejays took advantage of an Adrian Penalty and scored on a man-advantage as Opyd found the back of the net off of a feed from Drew Wassenaar. Opyd netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 1:35 later to bring Elmhurst to within a goal.

Fannell scored off a feed from Doug Boyd with 1:46 left in the first to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. Burgin scored twice in the second period and Fannell added his third goal of the half to put Adrian on top 7-2 at the half.

Tom Thielman scored early in the third quarter for the Bulldogs, but Jackson Mandli netted his second goal of the season for the Bluejays to bring Elmhurst to back to within five goals.

Adrian pulled away with five unanswered goals for the remainder of the third quarter. The Bulldogs tacked on a goal early in the fourth to build a 14-3 lead. Elmhurst's Mal Euson fired home his fifth goal of the year on a man-advantage with just under three minutes remaining to make the final score 14-4 in favor of Adrian.

Adrian outshot Elmhurst 36-18 and scooped up 40 ground balls to Elmhurst's 20. The Bulldogs also dominated on faceoffs, winning 16-of-22 opportunities. Elmhurst was successful on 12-of-18 clearing attempts while Adrian converted 14-of-17 clearing chances.

Opyd led Elmhurst in the loss with three points, totaling two goals and one assist. Nick Bonastia took the loss in goal, recording eight saves and four ground balls in the defeat.

Burgin paced Adrian in the win with five goals and one assist. Fannell added four goals and an assist while Boyd finished with five assists. Kevin Lerg made the start in goal and played 45 minutes, stopping four shots while allowing three goals.

Elmhurst kicks off Midwest Lacrosse Conference play on Wednesday, March 15, by hosting Aurora University at 4:00 p.m.
