Box Score BELOIT, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team dropped its season-opening contest 8-7 in a hard fought contest at Beloit College.
The game was tightly contests throughout as neither team led by more than two goals and the lead changed hands four times.
Beloit (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring on goals from Zach Carner and and Aidan Whinnery.
Elmhurst (0-1) answered back with three straight goals in the second quarter. The Bluejays took advantage of Beloit penalties to score a pair of goals on the man-advantage.
Drew Wassenaar struck first followed by
Mal Euson, just 32 seconds later to even the score at 2-2.
Alex Opyd scored off a
Matt Westhaver feed a few minutes later to give Elmhurst it's first lead of the day.
Whinnery evened the score at 3-3 with his second goal of the game with 6:36 left, but Opyd put the Bluejays on top 4-3 at the half with an unassisted tally with just under four minutes left in the half.
Beloit quickly evened the score at 4-4 early in the third, but the Bluejays went back on top when
Angelo Carbonara scored off an assist from Euson with 8:03 left. Back-to-back goals from Beloit's Tommy Porkka put the Buccaneers back in front 6-5 early in the fourth quarter.
Wassenaar tied the score with 6:49 left with his second strike of the day, and Opyd followed three minutes later with Elmhurst's third exta-man goal of the game, giving Elmhurst a 7-6 lead with 3:22 left in the contest.
Beloit's Matt Kelly tied the score with 2:12 remaining then Kelly assisted on Jacob Pritcher's game-winning goal with just 1:03 left on the clock.
Nick Bonastia took the loss in net for the Bluejays, allowing eight goals while recording 14 saves.
Opyd led Elmhurst's attack with three goals, one assist and two ground balls. Carbonara finished with three points with a goal and two assists.
Ben Porter scooped up seven ground balls and won 8-of-16 face off attempts.
The Bluejays were successful in only 11-of-24 clearing attempts and scored on 3-of-8 man advantage opportunities.
Despite the loss, the Bluejays' showed marked improvement from the 2013 season when Beloit defeated Elmhurst 17-4.
Elmhurst returns to action next Saturday by traveling to DePauw University. Elmhurst defeated DePauw 14-4 when the two squads met last season.
