Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Elmhurst lacrosse team battled with but came up short in an 11-6 road loss at Fontbonne University.
After totaling only two goals in their season opener, Elmhurst (0-2) rattled off six goals against Fontbonne (5-3) and trailed by only one at halftime before being outscored 7-3 in the second half.
Fontbonne scored just over two minutes into the opening period, and then tacked on a second goal midway through the second period to build a 2-0 cushion.
Elmhurst cut the lead in half as
Alex Opyd scored on a man-up advantage with 5:50 left in the second quarter. Fontbonne answered right back, taking a 3-1 lead but
Mal Euson scored with 2:49 left on the clock to pull the Bluejays to within a goal. The Griffins added a Brandon Laxton goal with 1:23 left, but the Bluejays responded again as
Ben Porter fired home a shot with 36 seconds left on the clock to bring the Bluejays to within a goal at halftime.
Fontbonne started strong in the third period, scoring three straight to open up a 7-3 lead. The Bluejays'
Tyler Zaremski netted his first goal of the season at the 1:53 mark to bring Elmhurst to within three goals.
Fontbonne scored twice to open the fourth period, before Zaremski pumped in back-to-back goals, the second coming on a feed from Opyd.
Fontbonne scored twice in the final two minutes to make the final score 11-6.
Fontbonne outshot Elmhurst 39-31 and enjoyed a 42-37 edge in ground balls. The Bluejays held an edge in faceoffs, winning 13-of-21 in the contest.
Zaremski netted a hat trick to lead the Bluejays with three goals while also collecting four ground balls. Opyd added a goal and two assists while also winning nine faceoffs.
Brian Furrow led the Griffins in the win with four goals. Peter Travis and Colin Benecke totaled there points apiece with a goal and two assists each.
Tyler York recorded 15 saves in net for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hosts Mt. St. Joseph College on Saturday.
