Elmhurst Wrestlers Edge Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst wrestling team upped its dual meet record to 6-2 on the year after defeating the University of Chicago by a tiebreaker after the dual finished with a 22-22 score. 

Elmhurst earned the tiebreaker victory by virtue of winning six of the 10 matches. 

Chicago grabbed a quick 6-0 lead after Devan Richter pinned Anthony Munoz in 2:30 at 125 pounds. Elmhurst surged in front after wins at 133 and 141 pounds. Jared Braun blanked Elliott Henderson 6-0 at 133 pounds and Ronnie Hauser followed with a 15-5 major decision over Chicago's Grant Morrison at 141 pounds. Chicago went back in front at 12-7 after Kahlan Lee-Lermer pinned Grant Smiley in 2:28 at 149 pounds. Keone Derain cut into the Maroon's lead by defeating Steve Bonsall 4-1 at 157 pounds. 

Tim Noverini defeated Chicago's Michael Speke 10-3 at 165 pounds to give Elmhurst a 13-12 advantage. Chicago went back in front at 17-13 following Nicholas DiNapoli's 16-0 technical fall victory over Elmhurst's Shawn Swiderek. Jason Lynch gave the Maroons a 22-13 lead after scoring a 16-0 technical fall over Elmhurst's Jerry Harris at 174 pounds. 

Mark Miller brought Elmhurst to within four points after defeating Chicago's Joseph Scheidt by technical fall in the third period (20-5). Competing in his first match of the season, Luis Montoya closed out the dual by scoring a 12-2 major decision over Chicago's Patrick Mulkerin at 285 pounds, tying the score at 22-22 and giving Elmhurst the dual meet victory based on the tiebreaker. 

Elmhurst will compete at Wheaton College's Pete Wilson Invitational next weekend (January 27-28).
