Augusto claims regional title; Hinger qualifies for NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The two-time reigning CCIW champ added another trophy to his case, as Rhenzo Augusto won the individual title at 157 lbs. in the NCAA Region V Championships on Saturday.

Joining Augusto on the podium was freshman Ryan Hinger, who would finish 3rd at 149 lbs. and secure his first career trip to the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships on Mar. 13-14.

Augusto entered play as the top seed at 157, and cruised through the first two matches on Friday, winning by tech fall 17-2 in the opener and 20-2 in the quarterfinals. The sophomore's closest matchup came in the semifinal, where a key takedown in the second period would lead to a 4-2 win.

In the championship match, Augusto scored two takedowns and picked up point of riding time for an 11-1 victory over the No. 2 seed, earning his first career regional title.

At 149, the 3rd-seeded Hinger would open with a shutout victory, 7-0, but lost in the quarterfinal by fall at 4:03, despite holding a controlling lead in the match. The freshman would bounce back with dominant wins in his next two consolation matches, a 16-0 and a fall at 3:23, and earned a spot in the 3rd-place match with a 10-2 win in the consolation semifinal.

Hinger would open the 3rd-place match with a takedown and nearfall in the first period on his way to an 11-5 victory.

As a team, the Bluejays would place 9th out of 17 teams in Region V, matching their best team performance at the regional since 2022.
