CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Sophomore Rhenzo Augusto earned All-American honors, advancing to the 1st-place match, while freshman Ryan Hinger made a splash at his first national meet appearance, at the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Augusto would win both of his matches on Friday by decision, opening as the 6-seed at 157 pounds. The Lake Barrington, Ill. native took a 4-1 win over the 11-seed from Dubuque (Iowa), then qualified for the semifinals with an 11-9 upset over the 3rd-seeded wrestler representing Wartburg (Iowa) on Friday night.
On Saturday morning, Augusto used a first-period takedown to cruise to a 9-2 win over the 7-seed from Stevens Tech (N.J.) and advance to the national championship bout on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Augusto would take an early 1-0 lead on an escape, but would lose the lead to start the third after top-seeded Peter Kane from Williams (Mass.) returned the favor. A late takedown in the final 20 seconds would close out the match as Augusto earned runner-up honors.
In the 149-pound division, unseeded Hinger would open with a win over the 16-seed from TCNJ, leading to a matchup with top-seeded Thomas Monn from McDaniel (Md.). Hinger would fall 11-2, but recovered with back-to-back wins on Friday night before coming up short in his third bout of the session.
With his performance throughout the weekend, Augusto becomes the 20th All-American in Elmhurst Men's Wrestling history, the Bluejays' first since 2022, and the first to reach the championship match since 2021.
Augusto finishes the season with an overall record of 32-3, while Hinger goes 30-9 in his first collegiate campaign.
