NCAA Midwest Wrestling Regional Preview

The 2013 NCAA Division III Championship will be the first where all wrestlers qualify through a regional championship. The top three wrestlers at each weight class will earn a ticket to the NCAA Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 15-16.

The NCAA Midwest Regional may just be the toughest of the six regionals. The Midwest Regional features six of the nation's top-30 teams, led by the host Elmhurst Bluejays. Elmhurst is enjoying its best season to date, ranking second in the nation with an 11-1 dual record and a runner-up finish at the NWCA Division III National Duals. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater ranks fourth (12-3) while WIAC rivals Wisconsin-La Crosse (15-3, ranked fifth) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (14-6, ranked ninth) also appear in the national top-10 rankings. Olivet College is ranked 12th in the nation with a 10-9 mark while Wabash College is ranked 29th with a 9-5 dual mark. Alma College, the University of Chicago, Manchester College, North Central College, Trine University and Wheaton College complete the field of 12 teams.

The region features nine returning All-Americans and 27 wrestlers ranked among the top-10 in the NWCA poll. The regional also features 28 grapplers ranked among the top-10 in the D3wrestle.com rankings.

125 Pounds – Elmhurst's Miguel Venecia is ranked seventh in the latest NWCA Division III national poll and brings a 20-5 record into the regional. Trine sophomore Brandon Preston is ranked 10th in the nation and carries a 26-10 record into the regional. Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Lance Fabry has a 22-14 mark. Alma freshman Tyler Foley owns a 21-11 record while UW-La Crosse's Izzy Balsiger is 23-2 on the season.

133 Pounds – The 133 pound weight class features a pair of CCIW Wrestlers ranked among the nation's elite. North Central's Nathan Fitzenreider is a two-time All-American who finished as the national-runner up at 125 pounds last season. Fitzenreider bring a 32-1 record into the regional and is unbeaten against Division III opponents while ranking second in the nation. Elmhurst's Dalton Bullard is a returning All-American after placing third in the nation last season. Bullard is currently ranked third with a 16-6 mark. Bullard dropped a 6-5 decision to Fitzenreider on riding time when the two clashed in the CCIW Championship. Wisconsin-Whitewater's Grant Sutter is also ranked among the nation's top-10, checking in at No. 7 with an 18-3 record. Sutter was an All-American in 2012, placing third in the nation at 125 pounds. Manchester's Kalib Jackson owns a 16-12 record and has won six of his last nine matches.

141 Pounds – The 141 pounds weight class may be the toughest class of the region as four of the nation's top six wrestlers will be competing with room for only three at nationals. Elmhurst's Ryan Earley was a national qualifier in 2012 and is currently ranked third in the nation with an unblemished 24-0 record. Wisconsin-La Crosse's Adam Sheley, a returning All-American at 133 pounds is ranked fourth in the nation with a 19-1 record. Wisconsin-Whitewater's Jake Fredricksen is a returning national qualifier and is ranked fifth in the nation with a 31-7 record. Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Jordan Kust is ranked sixth at 141 pounds with a 33-7 record. Olivet's Kenny Richmond bring a 24-12 record into the regional.

149 Pounds – Wabash's Jake Strausbaugh is a former national qualifier ranked sixth in the latest NWCA ranking with a 31-3 overall record. Olivet's Gage Pederson ranks eighth in the nation with a 29-7 record while Wisconsin-Whitewater's Elroy Perkin has appeared in the national rankings and brings a 32-11 record into the regional. Ben Strobel (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) has a 27-7 record on the season.

157 Pounds – Trine's Elias Larson highlights the weight class that boasts four of the nation's top-10 wrestlers. Larson, a two-time All-American, is ranked number one in the nation and owns a 15-1 record. Wisconsin-La Crosse's JR Lewis is ranked eighth in the nation and possess an 18-3 record this season. Wabash's Reece Lefever is the ninth-ranked wrestler in the weight class, carrying a 28-2 record into the regional. Wheaton's Mark Savenok is ranked 10th in the nation with a 32-3 record entering the regional.

165 Pounds – UW-Stevens Point's Jordan Schulte enters the regional ranked seventh with a 22-8 record. Olivet's James Myers is a two-time All-American and owns a 16-5 record while ranking eighth. Alma's Matthew Tuttle possesses a 26-6 mark while Elmhurst's Yousef Al-Ghoul carried a 24-10 record into the regional.

174 Pounds – Three of the nation's top-10 wrestlers will compete at 174 pounds in the Midwest Regional. UW-Stevens Point's Ryan Conat is ranked seventh on the year with a 27-3 record while Elmhurst's Danny Balderas is ranked ninth with an 18-3 mark. Balderas and Conant have split their two matches this season with Balderas besting Conat 3-2 when the two last clashed. UW-La Crosse's Kevin O'Brien is ranked 10th in the NWCA poll and owns a 12-3 record this season. O'Brien earned All-America honors at 165 pounds last season with a fourth-place finish. Trine senior Ryan Pieper is ranked 10th in the nation according to D3wrestle.com with a 25-7 record. Pieper was a national qualifier in 2012 at 184 pounds. Wheaton's Matt McCrary owns a 32-13 record.

184 Pounds – Elmhurst's two-time All-American Joe Rau highlights the 184 pound weight class. Rau, the third-place national finisher last season, has lost only one match in the last two seasons to a Division III opponent. Olivet's Jeff Holm also has a top-10 national ranking, checking in at No. 8 with a 25-9 record. An alternate at 197 pounds last season, Wabash's Austin O'Neil has a 22-5 overall record this and is 4-0 after dropping down to 184 pounds. Chicago junior Sam Pennisi (12-13) is a returning national qualifier at 184 pounds while Wheaton's Dan Olsen carries a 27-4 mark into the regional. UW-La Crosse sophomore is 23-7 this season.

197 Pounds – Three of the nation's top seven grapplers will battle at 197 pounds. Elmhurst senior transfer Mike Benefiel is ranked fourth in the nation with a 17-2 overall record while UW-Stevens Point's Dustin Wozniak ranks fifth with a 29-4 mark. Benefiel bested Wozniak 9-3 earlier this season. UW-Whitewater's Shane Siefert is ranked seventh with a 25-8 mark. Olivet's Logan Renas was a national qualifier at 285 pounds last season and has a 22-10 record this season while dropping a weight class. Wheaton's Darren Faber is a returning national qualifier and owns a 31-9 mark on the season. Chicago's Mario Palmisano leads the Maroons in victories with an 18-8 record.

285 Pounds – Wisconsin La Crosse's Billy Mayer is ranked third at 285 pounds and bring a 17-1 record into the regional. Mayer is a two-time All-American, placing fifth in 2012 and sixth in 2011. Wisconsin-Whitewater's Anthony Edgren is ranked 10th in the NWCA poll with a 26-5 record. Alma's Andrew Robinson brings an impressive 36-8 record into the regional (ranked #10 in the D3wrestle.com poll) while UW-Stevens Point's Jordan Koranda boasts a 28-8 record.
