Tennis Team Takes Sixth At CCIW Championship

The Elmhurst College women's tennis team totaled 10 points to place sixth at the CCIW Championship in Kenosha, Wis.

Wheaton College won the team title with 72 points while Carthage College took second with 45 points. Illinois Wesleyan University placed third with 35 points, edging fourth-place finisher Augustana College by two points. North Central College totaled 30 points to place fifth while Millikin University finished in seventh place with zero points.

All of Elmhurst's singles players were eliminated on day one of the tournament, but not before scoring points for the Bluejays.

Kayla Magiapane scored an opening round win over Illinois Wesleyan's Alissa Goetz at No. 4 singles before falling in the semifinals 6-2, 6-2 to Wheaton's Lauren Schlabach. Magiapane was defeated in the playback semifinals 8-1 by Carthage's Erin Henrickson.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Stephanie Ruff dropped her opening round match to Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Kerwin (6-0, 6-2) but bounced back to upend Millikin's Marguerite Mahoney 8-0 in the playback round. Ruff dropped an 8-4 decision to North Central's Cory Schillerstrom in the playback semifinals.

Nicole Darga posted a 1-2 record at No. 2 singles. Darga fell to Illinois Wesleyan's Helen Alex 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round but recovered to blank Millikin's Lauren Lambert 8-0 in the playback round. Darga was eliminated in the playback semifinals after falling 8-3 to Augustana's Brittany Reece.

At No. 3 singles, Jordyn Hoover earned a point for the Bluejays in the playback round. Hoover was downed by Illinois Wesleyan's Lauren Drawbridge 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round before shutting out Millikin's Brianna Hogan 8-0 in the playback round. Hoover dropped a playback semifinal match to Augustana's Krista Panko 8-1.

Emily Tarlini and Jennifer Guenther both finished 0-2 in tournament competition at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Tarlini fell in the opening round to Illinois Wesleyan's Svenja Schroeder 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. After receiving a bye in the first round of the playback bracket, Tarlini was stopped by Carthage's Abby Ludwig 8-2 in the playback semifinals. Guenther suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Carthage's Amanda Bizub in the opening round. After a playback round bye, Guenther was upended by Augustana's Mariah Bardo 8-1 in the playback semifinals.

In doubles play, the Bluejays' duo of Ruff and Hoover fell to North Central's Schillerstrom and Katie Hatch 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round at No. 1 doubles. Ruff and Hoover blanked Millikin's Lambert and Mahoney 8-0 in the playback round before falling to Illinois Wesleyan's Alex Helen and Andrea Kerwin 8-5 in the consolation semifinals.

At No. 2 doubles, Elmhurst's team of Guenther and Magiapane fell to Augustana's Reece and Krista Panko 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round. Guenther and Magiapane dropped an 8-1 decision to Illinois Wesleyan's Lauren Drawbridge and and Alissa Goetz in the playback semifinals on Saturday.

Elmhurst's tandem of Tarlini and Darga fell 6-3, 7-6 to North Central's Madeline Urban and Stephanie Brunetti at No. 3 doubles.  Darga and Tarlini were upended by Augustana's Chelsea Lavin and Emily Kaczmarek 9-8 in the playback semifinals.
