ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's soccer team kicked off its 2010 season by shutting out Dominican University 2-0 at Berens Park.
After a scoreless first half, the Bluejays struck for a pair of goals in the game's final 45 minutes to earn the victory.
Sarah Harvey put Elmhurst on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when she kicked home a rebound off a
Kelsey Caldwell shot. Less than five minutes later,
Biba Beckwith redirected a
Stephanie Thomson cross out of midair and into the back of the net for the Bluejays' second tally of the game.
Elmhurst outshot Dominican 11-7 overall, including a 7-4 advantage in the decisive second half.
Allison Korbel earned her first shutout of the season in net by stopping all six shots she faced. Megan Schulz took the loss in goal for the Stars, allowing two goals and recording six saves.
The win for Elmhurst was the second consecutive shutout over Dominican. The Bluejays blanked the Stars 1-0 exactly one year earlier during the 2009 season-opener in River Forest.
Elmhurst travels to Kalamazoo College on Saturday, September 4.
