Elmhurst Football alum tagged to lead Arizona Cardinals as head coach

Elmhurst University graduate and former Bluejay quarterback Mike LaFleur '10 has been selected as the newest head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, the NFL team announced on Sunday.

LaFleur becomes the first Bluejay to lead an NFL team as head coach, and is the fifth NCAA Division III alum currently serving as a head coach in the league. Along with his brother, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, the LaFleurs become just the third pair of brothers to serve simultaneously as head coaches in the NFL.

During his time at Elmhurst, Mike LaFleur played both sides of the ball, starting at quarterback as a sophomore in 2006 and later moving into the Bluejay secondary as a senior and team captain. A former teammate of current Elmhurst head coach Mike Heffernan '07, LaFleur had his first coaching job on campus, serving as an offensive assistant with the Jays in 2009.

"We're so proud of Coach LaFleur and will always be grateful for his contributions to Elmhurst University, as a student-athlete and coach," Elmhurst University President Troy D. VanAken said.

LaFleur joined the NFL ranks as an assistant in 2014 and was promoted to offensive coordinator, the position he has held for the past five seasons with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams. He joins Arizona as the franchise's 44th head coach.
