RIVER GROVE, Ill. -Â The Elmhurst University men's wrestling team took on competition at the Art Kraft Memorial Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 14).
Freshman
Connor Kelly led the way for the Jays with a 4th-place finish at 184 pounds, fighting all the way to the semifinals before falling in two-straight matches to take fourth. Overall, ten Bluejays competed in the event.
RESULTSÂ
125 lbs:
- Owen Brotherton had a challenging outing, dropping his opening match to Mario Rameriz (Harper College) by technical fall (17-1). He received a bye in the consolation round but fell to Dominic Chimeno (Iowa Lakes) by major decision (19-7).
- Matthew Nguyen advanced to the second championship round after a bye but was pinned by Rufus Bartee (Rochester Tech) at 2:08. In consolation, Nguyen received another bye before falling to Chimeno by pin in 1:27.
133 lbs:
- Joe Fornaro started with a bye but faced a dominant Anthony Bernardo (McKendree), who secured a technical fall (19-4). In the consolation round, Fornaro was pinned by Gavin Enders (Harper) in 2:22.
141 lbs:
- Trai Fitzgerald battled valiantly but dropped his first match to Jadyn Friedrichs (Iowa Lakes) by pin in 1:19. After a bye in the consolation bracket, he lost to Lucas Schanen (Lakeland) by technical fall (16-0).
149 lbs:
- Erwin Morales provided bright moments for the Bluejays, pinning Angel Nava (Morton College) in 1:58 in the opening round. However, Morales was pinned by Brady Schiffli (Manchester) in 52 seconds in the next round and lost a hard-fought 7-3 decision to Jase Salin (Triton) in the consolation bracket.
157 lbs:
- Charles Gross rebounded after a first-round pin by Dillon Raab (Lakeland) with an impressive technical fall victory (19-2) over Sonny Gilbert (Marian University - Ancilla). Gross's run ended in a close 9-4 decision loss to Daeveon Cheeks (Unattached Harper).
165 lbs:
- Lukasz Wesolowski, Adonai Zora-Awni, and Reese Davis each competed in the 165-pound bracket but were unable to advance deep into the tournament. Wesolowski and Zora-Awni both earned byes in the consolation rounds but fell to tough opponents by fall. Davis dropped his opening match to Garrett VonGunten (Manchester) and was pinned in 21 seconds by Joshua Berlin (Ellsworth) in the consolation bracket.
184 lbs:
- Connor Kelly emerged as Elmhurst's standout performer, earning a 4th-place finish. Kelly began with two dominant pins, taking down Kaleb Homan (1:07) and Elisha Faison (0:59). In the semifinals, he fell to Ali Adel (Harper) by major decision (15-3). Kelly ended the day in the 3rd place match, where he was pinned by Christian Byrne (Henry Ford College) at 4:53.

The Bluejays are off for winter vacation, and will resume action with a CCIW dual at Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7pm in Mequon, Wis.
