DECATUR, Ill. -Â The Elmhurst University men's wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Millikin Open Saturday afternoon, with freshman
Rhenzo Augusto and sophomore
Mataeo Blessing each placing in their respective weight classes.
Augusto led Elmhurst with a second-place finish in the 157-pound championship bracket, while Blessing placed seventh at 165, fighting back after falling in the opening round of the championship bracket. In total, Elmhurst had 19 different student-athletes make the trip and compete in the open.
Augusto got his day started with a first-period fall against Jeremiah Crisp of Blackburn College in round one, while taking a 21-4 tech. fall win in round two to advance to the quarterfinals. There, Augusto would win via major decision over Christian Pfeiffer-Laguerre of D2 McKendree, and used a technical fall win over Austin Abitua of Aurora University in the semi's to advance to the championship match. Facing off against 20th-ranked Carter Martinson of Central College, the two would wrestle a classic with Martinson taking the match via a 12-11 decision.
Blessing fell in the opening championship round to a third-period fall, and received a bye in the consolation first round and a medical forfeit in round two. Blessing would begin consolation wrestling with a tech. fall win in the third round, and a 3-1 decision over fellow teammate
Nicholas Asllani advanced Blessing to the consolation semifinals. There, Blessing would lose by tech. fall to fall into the 7th/8th place match, where he would receive a non contest to place seventh at 165.
