MEQUON, Wis. - The Elmhurst University men's wrestling team completed competition at the Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday (Nov. 23).
The Bluejays sent 18 student-athletes to the tournament and managed to have two Jays place in their respective weight classes. Rhenzo Augusto placed third at 157, while David Ortiz placed sixth in the heavyweight division.
In the opening round, Augusto began with dominance, pinning Nolan Flores (North Central College) in 3:31. He maintained his momentum in round two, earning a decisive 7-0 victory over Zaren Anderson (Carthage College). In the quarterfinals, Augusto faced a setback against Tim Smith (Wabash), losing by major decision 12-3. He rebounded by defeating Luke Christie (North Central College) 5-1 in the consolation third round and advanced to the third/fourth place match by winning with a 20-5 technical fall over Daniel Meeker (Wartburg). Augusto ultimately placed third after a medical forfeit in the final match.
Ortiz started on a high note, pinning Chris Gielow (Carthage College) in 3:51, and followed up with a solid 7-2 decision over Sam Costello (Loras) in the second round. Ortiz faced a close contest in the quarterfinals but was edged out by Mitch Williamson (Wartburg) in a 3-0 decision. He advanced via medical forfeit to the fifth/sixth place match and ended his run with a narrow 2-0 loss to Robby Bates (North Central College).
