WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to Carthage in the CCIW semifinals.
The Red Men (20-6) took an early lead with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. Carthage then pulled out two tight doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Pawel Jaworski and Chris Conley edged Elmhurst's
Chris Harrison and
Quinn Jennings at No. 1 and Alex Boomgarden and Ryan Jump completed the sweep with a 9-7 win over
Alex Abbuhl and
Ricardo Franco at No. 2.
In singles play, the Red Men won five first sets to take firm control of the match. At No. 3, Jaworski won two tight sets against Abbuhl 6-4, 6-4 to put Carthage on the brink, before Boomgarden defeated Harrison 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot to seal the match.
When the match was called, Jennings led Ryan Jump 6-2, 5-5 at No. 2. The other three Bluejays
Kyle Endicott (5-7, 3-1 at No. 4), Franco (3-6, 5-5 at No. 5) and
Justin Delawder (3-6, 3-3 at No. 6) were locked in tight second sets after dropping the first.
Elmhurst will face either Augustana or Wheaton in the third-place match tomorrow in Wheaton at 10:00 a.m.
