ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's tennis team used prowess at the top of the lineup to defeat Monmouth College 6-3 in the Bluejays' home opener.
Elmhurst took the top four singles matches and top two doubles spots in its victory.
Chris Harrison and
Quinn Jennings quickly put Elmhurst on the board first as they defeated Marco Franco and Landon Walker 8-1 at No. 1. The No. 2 tandem of
Kyle Endicott and
Justin Delawder followed suit with an 8-3 victory. Monmouth took its only doubles points at No. 3 as Dylan Wong and Ronnie Griffin squeaked past
Alex Abbuhl and
Ricardo Franco 9-7.
The Scots' Griffin pulled the match even with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of
David Wilson at No. 6. The Bluejays answered by taking the next three singles matches to seal the victory at 5-2. Harrison knocked off Walker 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 and Jennings scored another point for Elmhurst just moments later with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Wong. Abbuhl clinched the match for the Bluejays with a hard fought 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
The team split the final matches of the day as Paulo Pilego defeated Delawder 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Endicott scored a three-set, 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-8 win over M. Franco at No. 4.
The Bluejays host the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Division I foe, next Friday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. at Courts Plus.
