KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to top-seeded Carthage College in the semifinals of the CCIW Championship.
Elmhurst slipped to 9-10 on the season with the loss and will face Wheaton College in the third-place match, tomorrow, at 10:00 a.m.
Carthage raced out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles contests. Pawel Jaworski and Jordan Verbauwhede downed Elmhurst's
Chris Harrison and
Luke Tanaka 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Alex Boomgarden and Chris Conley toppled Matthew Kulma and
Ricardo Franco 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Ryan Jump and Alex Ferruzi finished the doubles sweep for Carthage by edging
Quinn Jennings and
Alex Abbuhl 9-8 with a 7-6 win tiebreaker win.
In singles play, Boomgarden downed Jennings 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while Conley defeated Abbuhl 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to seal the match for Carthage. The remaining four singles' contests went unfinishe with Carthage leading three of the contests. Jaworski held a 6-4 1-1 lead over Harrison at No. 1 singles while Jump won the first set (6-4, 1-2) against Tanaka at No. 3 singles. Verbauwhede led Kulma 6-4, 3-3 at No. 4 singles. Franco was the only Bluejay to win a set in singles play, taking the first set 6-4 at No. 6 singles against Ferruzi.Â
