ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team suffered its first CCIW loss of the season by falling 7-2 to Wheaton College at the Brune Tennis Courts.
Wheaton (9-5, 2-0 CCIW) won two of the three doubles matches and took five of the six singles contests en route to the seven-point victory.
Elmhurst (6-4, 2-1 CCIW) started strong in doubles play with the Bluejays' tandem of
Chris Harrison and
Luke Tanaka defeating Wheaton's Josh Ward and Karl Wenzel 8-4 at No.1 doubles. Wheaton scored wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead. The Thunder's Justin Ancona and Matt Steiner toppled
Matt Kulma and
Ricardo Franco 8-2 at No. 2 while Derek Mumaw and Brent Westergren stopped
Quinn Jennings and
Alex Abbuhl 8-6 at No. 3.
In singles play, Ward edged Harrison in three sets at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Ancona followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tanaka at No. 2 singles while Steiner rallied from a set down to defeat Jennings 6-7 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Lincoln Metz downed Abbuhl 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while Elmhurst scored its only singles point at No. 5 singles with Kulma defeating Wenzel 6-2, 6-4. Mumaw upended Franco 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst hosts Dominican University on Sunday, April 12.
