DECORAH, Iowa - The Elmhurst men's tennis team moved to 8-7 on the season after splitting a pair of contests in Iowa. The Bluejays toppled Wartburg College 7-2 to start the day before falling 7-2 to Luther College.
ELMHURST 7, WARTBURG 2 - The Bluejays swept all six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Wartburg College.Â
Warburg (7-14) won two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Elmhurst scored a victory at No. 1 doubles behind
Chris Harrison and
Luke Tanaka's 8-4 win over Luke Brenna and Brandon Hornback. Wartburg's Eric Hilpert and Andre Green scored an 8-6 win over Elmhurst's
Matt Kulma and
Ricardo Franco 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Dan Van Groningen and Fumiya Kitahara upended
Quinn Jennings and
Allen Riquelme 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Elmhurst swept all six singles matches with Harrison opening play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Hilpert at No. 1 singles. Tanaka followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hornback at No. 2 singles while Jennings dispatched Benna 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. Kulma toppled Kitahara 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 at No.4 singles and Franco toppled Greene 6-1, 7-6 at No. 5 singles. Riquelme closed out play with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 win over Frank Lonconti at No. 6 singles.
LUTHER 7, ELMHURST 2- The Bluejays won one match in singles play and one doubles match while suffering a 7-2 loss to Luther.
Harrison and Tanaka scored the team's win at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory over Sam Cychosz and Anders Jensen. Luther's Kyle Appel and Trent Schneider downed Kulma and Franco 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while Quinn Foley and Isaiah Mayerchak stopped Jennings and Riquelme 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Appel downed Harrison 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Schneider toppled Tanaka 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Jennings scored Elmhurst's only win at No. 3 singles after Cychosz was forced to retire. Jensen toppled Kulma 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while Sam Buffington toppled Franco 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 5 singles. Foley defeated Allen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on April 21.Â
