HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team wrapped up its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head by splitting a pair of contests. The Bluejays defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh 7-2 before falling 7-2 to Carleton College.
ELMHURST 7, OSHKOSH 2 - Elmhurst improved to 4-2 overall with the five-point victory over Oshkosh. Elmhurst swept all six singles contests while Oshkosh recorded two wins in doubles play.
Oshkosh (4-10) earned a pair of tight victories in doubles play. The Titans' Mike Gillespie and Aidan Sauberlich downed Elmhurst's
Chris Harrison and
Luke Tanaka 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Oshkosh's Vincent Gorski and Adam Martin followed with a 9-8 win over Elmhurst's
Matt Kulma and
Ricardo Franco at No. 2 doubles. Elmhurst's duo of
Quinn Jennings and
Alex Abbuhl downed Logan Zastrow and David La Grange 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Elmhurst swept all six singles matches to score the 7-2 win. Harrison downed Gillespie 7-5, 7-6 at No. 1 singles while Tanaka followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sauberlich at No. 2 singles. Jennings defeated Gorski 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 while Abbuhl rolled past Martin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Kulma rallied from a set down to defeat Zastrow 5-7, 7-1, 10-4 at No. 5 singles. Franco closed singles play with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over David Leffler at No. 6 singles.
CARLETON 7, ELMHURST 2 - Elmhurst slipped to 4-3 on the season following a 7-2 loss to Carleton. Carleton (15-0) won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests.
Andrew Hwang and Erik Johnson toppled Harrison and Tanaka 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while Ezra Frankel and Kevin Mei clipped Kulma and Franco 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Jennings and Abbuhl put Elmhurst on the scoreboard with an 8-6 win over Mauricio Gonzalez and Kevin Hurley at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Mei downed Harrison 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Tanaka fell 6-2, 7-6 to Johnson at No. 2 singles. Hwang upended Jennings 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Abbuhl scored Elmhurst's only point in singles play by defeating Gonzalez 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 4 singles. Patton McClelland defeated Kulma 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles while Frankel wrapped up singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Franco at No. 2 singles.
Elmhurst hosts Hope College at Courts Plus on Saturday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m.
