Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst volleyball team, ranked 15th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, won its fifth straight contest by upending Edgewood College 23-25, 25-11, 25-17, 27-25 at the Carthage College Tournament.
Elmhurst (8-1) fell behind in the opening set 10-1 as six attack errors on the Bluejays' helped the Eagles build a nine-point cushion. The Bluejays clawed their way back into the set, using a 19-8 run to build a 20-18 advantage. A service error and a pair of attack errors put Edgewood in front 21-20. Elmhurst held off the Eagles on three set points before a kill from Savannah Koester gave Edgewood the opening set.
Elmhurst made short work of the Eagles in the second set, building a 14-9 cushion and then closing the set on a 11-2 run to even the match at a set apiece. Elmhurst took control of the third set with the score even at 10-10. A 10-3 run behind the serve of
Sam Szarmach and
Taylor Nirchi gave Elmhurst a seven-point cushion. The Bluejays pulled away for the 25-17 win and jumped in front two sets to one in the process.

Jackie PavilonisEdgewood (3-5) led 10-6 to start the fourth set, but Elmhurst answered back five straight points to grab an 11-10 lead. The two squads traded points until Edgewood grabbed a 20-18 cushion. Elmhurst answered back by winning four of the next five points to take a 22-21 lead. Edgewood pulled even at 22, but the Eagles were not able to reclaim the lead for the remainder of the set. The Eagles fought off a pair of match points, but a block from
Mary Lawrence and
Jackie Pavilonis sealed the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .165 for the match with 49 kills and 26 errors in 139 attempts, but the Bluejays were a force at the net, tallying 14 blocks. Szarmach continued to pace Elmhurst's attack, finishing with 17 kills, nine digs, three blocks and two aces. Pavilonis added 10 kills for the Bluejays and dominated at the net, tallying nine blocks in the win.
Melissa Nava added nine kills and five blocks while Hannah Nimirck tallied 30 assists, eight digs and three aces. Lawrence added five blocks and
Amy Schryver led the squad in digs with 13 while playing in her first match of the 2014 season.
Edgewood hit .008 for the match with 34 kills and 33 errors in 126 attempts. Jordan Winkler led the offensive attack with 14 kills and 13 digs while Koester chipped in with seven kills. Rachel Thomsen finished with 22 assists in the loss.
Elmhurst will face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 6:00 p.m.
