Bluejays Ignite Late Comeback to Push Carthage to Fifth Set

Results

Elmhurst volleyball closed out its 2025 regular season in dramatic fashion, rallying from two sets down to defeat Carthage 3–2 (14–25, 18–25, 25–19, 25–23, 15–10) Friday night at R.A. Faganel Hall. The win marked the Bluejays' 10th of the season and capped their CCIW schedule at 3–4.

After struggling to find their rhythm in the opening two sets, Elmhurst began its comeback behind strong play from Paige Belfield and Blair Johnson. In the third, the Bluejays turned momentum with a service run from Keely Larson that included back-to-back aces. Belfield, Leah Russell, and Nyah Moustakas each added kills to help Elmhurst pull away late for a 25–19 victory.

Elmhurst carried its energy into the fourth, battling through four ties and multiple lead changes. Freddie Temple and Alexis Casey connected effectively to spread the attack, while Larson and Johnson each delivered key kills in the closing points. Belfield sealed the set 25–23 with her 12th kill of the night, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The Bluejays continued to dominate in the final frame, jumping out to a 9–3 lead after Johnson notched consecutive kills and a service ace. Larson and Russell combined for two blocks at the net, and Temple's precision setting kept Carthage on their heels. Elmhurst held firm to close out the comeback 15–10, completing one of its most resilient performances of the season.

Belfield led Elmhurst with 12 kills, 14 digs, and an ace, while Johnson followed with 11 kills, three block assists, and two aces. Larson contributed seven kills, four block assists, and three aces, while Russell added eight kills and a block. Temple ran the offense with 35 assists, seven digs, and a .385 attack percentage. Casey anchored the defense with 23 digs and seven assists, and Gianna Ptaszek captured 10 digs and four aces from the service line.

Elmhurst finished with 53 kills, 11 service aces, and eight team blocks while hitting .171 as a unit. The Bluejays ended this week on a high note, rallying to take down Carthage in five thrilling sets on their home floor.
