Elmhurst volleyball battled through four sets but came up short against Concordia Wisconsin, falling 3–1 (14–25, 21–25, 25–23, 22–25) Tuesday night at R.A. Faganel Hall.
After dropping the opening set, the Bluejays found their rhythm in the second behind steady passing and timely offense from Paige Belfield and Blair Johnson. Keely Larson and Maggie Cross each added kills during a mid-set push that brought Elmhurst within striking distance, but the Falcons held off the rally to take a 2–0 lead.
Elmhurst fought back in the third set, building momentum behind efficient attacking and strong defense. The Bluejays hit .105 in the frame and forced Concordia into 10 attack errors. Belfield and Larson led the charge with multiple kills apiece, while Leah Russell provided an immediate spark off the bench with four kills and a service ace. Setter Freddie Temple guided the offense with 45 assists, while libero Alexis Casey anchored the back row with 34 digs and a service ace. Elmhurst held off a late push from the Falcons to close out the set 25–23.
The Bluejays carried that energy into the fourth, jumping ahead 7–2 after kills from Belfield and Larson. However, Concordia Wisconsin responded with a 9–1 run midway through the frame to reclaim control. Elmhurst rallied once more to pull within two at 23–21, but the Falcons secured the match with a 25–22 final.
Belfield led Elmhurst with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Larson finished with 10 kills, two blocks, and 11 points. Johnson also reached double figures with 11 kills, and Temple added two kills and a block while running the offense. Casey's 34 digs marked a season-high, and Gianna Ptaszek added nine digs defensively.
Elmhurst totaled 51 kills, four aces, and three blocks while hitting .187 as a team. The loss moved the Bluejays to 8–16 overall. They return to action later this week hosting Carthage College on October 24, at 7 pm.
