ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team moved to 10-3 overall after splitting matches with Millikin University and Grinnell College.
The Bluejays blanked Millikin 9-0 to improve to 3-0 in the CCIW before falling 6-3 to Grinnell in a battle of two regionally ranked squads.
ELMHURST 9, MILLIKIN 0 - Elmhurst (10-2 overall breezed through the three doubles matches.
Alex Harbert and
Will Jung dispatched Taylor Nave and Emerick Fulton 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Vincent McPherson and
Chris Harrison followed with an 8-0 victory over Juan Carlos Santamaria and Alex Cardisco at No. 2 doubles.
Luke Tanaka and David Devaney combined to blank Chris Klomp and Kyle McArdell 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Tanaka dealt Have a 6-4, 6-1 loss at No. 1 singles while
Quinn Jennings cruised past Fulton 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Bluejays did not drop a game over the next three matches with Harris downing Klomp (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 singles, Devaney toppling Santamaria (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles and
Matthew Kulma upending Cardascio (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 singles.
Anthony Condie closed out singles play with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 come-from-behind win over McArdell at No. 6 singles.
GRINNELL 6, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst fell 6-3 to Grinnell to fall to 10-3 on the season. Grinnell entered the match ranked 12th in the ITA Central region while Elmhurst checked in at #13.
Grinnell (28-3) swept the three doubles matches and the two squads split the six singles contests.
In doubles action, Grinnell's Elliott Czarnecki and Tommy Pitcher narrowly edged Harbert and Jung 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Tracy Johnson and Emilio Gomez slipped past Harrison and McPherson 8-6 at No. 2 doubles while Cole Miller and C.J. Ray upended Devaney and Tanaka 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Jung downed Czarnecki 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Harbert followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Emilio Gomez at No. 2 singles. Miller stopped McPherson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Tanaka rallied from a set down to defeat Ray 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 in three sets. Grinnell closed with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles with Johnson downing Jennings 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Charlie Wilheim toppling Devaney 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst plays at North Central College on April 10.
