Bluejays Split Pair With Otterbein

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 XENIA, Ohio - The Elmhurst baseball team opened the 2014 season by splitting a doubleheader with Otterbein University.

Elmhurst won the opening contest 13-5 but Otterbein bounced back to salvage a split with a 14-7 win in game two.

ELMHURST 13, OTTERBEIN 5 - Dave Wolak belted three home runs and drove in six runs to lead the Bluejays to a season-opening win over Otterbein.

Elmhurst jumped on top with a two-run blast from Wolak in the first inning. A two-run single from Tom Pumo and another two-run shot from Wolak sparked a five-run Elmhurst outburst in the second inning to put the Bluejays up 7-0. Elmhurst tacked on two runs in the fourth to grab a nine-run cushion. After Otterbein plated three runs in the top of the fifth, the Bluejays extended their lead back to eight after Wolak launched his third two-run homer of the day.

Wolak finished 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBI and four runs scored. Pumo added a pair of hits and drove in three while Greg Struck banged out two hits and drove in two for Elmhurst.

Sean Kettering sparked Otterbein with three RBI in the loss.

Jordan Hanlon picked up the win from the mound for the Bluejays. Hanlon worked 7.1 innings and scattered seven hits, four runs and two walks while striking out five.

OTTERBEIN 14, ELMHURST 7 - Otterbein earned the split by scoring six runs in the final two innings to pull away for the seven-run victory.

Otterbein raced out to a 5-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings, but the Bluejays sliced the lead down to one with four runs in the bottom of the third. Wolak singled home a pair of runs and Zach Tsiodras belted a two-run homer to account for the Bluejays' runs.

Elmhurst took a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning with RBIs from Tsiodras and Pumo, but Otterbein scored three runs on five hits in the sixth to go back on top 8-6. Otterbein broke the game open with five runs in the eighth, sparked by a three-run double from Tyler Kent.

Tsiodras led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with three runs driven in. Wolak and Pumo collected two hits and drove in two runs apiece in the loss.

Jeff Guzzi made the start and earned a no-decision, scattering five earned runs and nine hits over 5.1 innings of work. Brennan McClung took the loss in relief, surrendering five runs and four hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Taylor Ellis tossed five innings and allowed six runs to earn the win for Otterbein.

Elmhurst and Otterbein will play the rubber game of the three-game series, tomorrow.
