Bluejays blast nine runs in first inning to close Florida trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Bluejays dominated from the first pitch on Wednesday morning, as Elmhust Baseball closed out the RussMatt Invitational with a 14-1 win over Purchase (N.Y.).

Elmhurst 14, Purchase 1 (7 innings)
WP: Banaszynski (2-2) • LP: Fanning

The Jays pounded out nine runs on six hits in the top of the 1st, taking a commanding lead before the Panthers would see their first at-bat. Brett Vercruysse, Timothy O'Connell and Evan Johnson all recorded two RBI in the inning, which saw the first five batters of the Elmhurst lineup come up to the plate twice.

A Joey Robinson walk followed by singles from Landon Truong and Connor Drowns loaded the bases for Marty Fraga, who was hit by a pitch in the top of the 2nd to push across another run. Elmhurst added on three more in the 5th inning, highlighted by an RBI double from O'Connell that scored Fraga as the Jays increased the lead to 13-0.

Ryan Nugent recorded a pinch-hit RBI single in the 6th inning, before Purchase got on the board in the bottom of the 7th. A double play rolled up by Vercruysse would end the game on run rule to give the Bluejays their sixth win of the season.

Four Jays finished with multiple hits in the win, and seven recorded at least one RBI. Eight different Bluejays would score at least one run on the day. O'Connell would finish 2-for-4 with two doubles, driving in three RBI and scoring three runs.

Landon Banaszynski threw a complete game to earn the win, scattering eight hits without allowing an earned run over seven innings.

The Bluejays return home and will begin CCIW play this weekend, when they take on Millikin on Sunday, March 29. First pitch with the Big Blue is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
