RACINE, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team upped its record to 5-1 on the season by toppling the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 7-2.
UW-Eau Claire (5-4) jumped out to an early lead by taking two of the three doubles contests. Ryan Vande Linde and Joe Meier edged Elmhurst's
Alex Harbert and
Will Jung 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Kyle Hoffmann and Josh Chuba scored an 8-6 win over the Bluejays'
Vincent McPherson and
Chris Harrison at No. 2 doubles. Elmhurst's duo of
Luke Tanaka and David Devaney scored an 8-4 win over UW-Eau Claire's Michael Mauthe and Austin Auleta at No. 3 doubles.
Elmhurst earned the team victory by sweeping all six singles matches. Harbert downed Vande Linde in three sets with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles. Jung dispatched Meier 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while McPherson made short work of Hoffmann (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3 singles. Tanaka stopped Nathan Tretsven 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles while
Quinn Jennings rallied past Chuba in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 10-2). Harrison closed out singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mauthe at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst takes on Carthage College next Saturday, March 14 at the Racine Racquet and Fitness Club.
