Men's Tennis Team Splits Pair in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Elmhurst men's tennis team improved 2-1 on the season after splitting a pair of contests in Iowa. The Bluejays fell 9-0 at Coe College before capping the day with an 8-1 victory over Monmouth College.

COE 9, ELMHURST 0  - Elmhurst opened the day with a 9-0 loss Coe, the seventh-ranked team in the latest ITA regional poll. The host Kohawks swept the three doubles contests to open the competition. Noah Sprinkel and Riley Galbraith downed Elmhrust's Alex Harbert and Will Jung 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Bluejays' duo of Chris Harrison and Vincent McPherson suffered an 8-4 loss to Ryan Hickman and Michael Janseen at No. 2 doubles. Coe's Sean Stokstad and Zack Decker scored an 8-3 win over Elmhurst's David Devaney and Luke Tanaka at No. 3 doubles.

Coe finished the sweep of the Bluejays by taking all six singles matches. Sprinkel opened up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Harbert at No. 1 singles while Galbraith followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Jung at No. 2 singles. Hickman upended McPherson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Stokstad followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tanaka at No. 4 singles. Alex Bernt defeated Quinn Jennings 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles while Janssen finished singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Harrison.

ELMHURST 8, MONMOUTH 1 - The Bluejays bounced back from the loss to Coe by dispatching Monmouth 8-1 for the team's second victory of the season.

Elmhurst swept the three doubles contests to open play. Harbert and Jung toppled David Johnson and David Stewart 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while McPherson and Harrison scored an 8-3 win over Chris Franco and Derek Rineberg at No. 2 doubles. Tanaka and Devaney combined to blank Marco Franco and Alex King 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Elmhurst finished the 8-1 victory by taking home five of the six singles contests. Harbert toppled Chris Franco 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Monmouth scored its only point of the day at No. 2 singles when Johnson stopped McPherson in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-3). Tanaka rallied from a set down to defeat Stewart 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Jennings upended Rienberg 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Harrison scored a three-set win over Marco Franco (7-5, 2-6, 10-7) at No. 5 singles while Devaney dispatched Andrew Shiakallis 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Elmhurst, ranked 13th in the latest ITA regional poll, travels to Wabash College next Saturday, February 15.
