Bluejays Sputter in 10-0 Loss to Chicago

Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst football team slipped to 1-2 on the season after struggling in a 10-0 loss at the University of Chicago.

The Bluejays' offense struggled for the second straight week as turnovers and penalties proved costly. Elmhurst turned the ball over three times and committed 10 penalties for 76 yards while being shut out for the first time since the 2006 season.

Elmhurst was effective on the ground, averaging 5.3 yards per carry while rushing for 189 yards on 35 carries. Elmhurst struggled with its passing game as Bluejay quarterbacks completed only 10-of-32 pass attempts for 61 yards.

Elmhurst's best scoring chance came in the opening quarter as the offense drove to the Chicago 15-yard line, but David Tomis' 32-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright and bounced back. The Bluejays mounted a second-quarter drive down to the Chicago 30-yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to the Maroons.

While the Bluejays' offense struggled in the opening half, the defense held Chicago at bay, forcing the Maroons into five straight punts before the half ended.

Chicago jumped on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter after an Elmhurst turnover. Greg Thome picked off Elmhurst's Logan Stelzriede and returned the ball to the Bluejays' 41-yard line. The Maroons pushed the ball down to the Elmhurst nine-yard line before settling for a 26-yard field goal from Karol Kurzydlowski.

After an Elmhurst punt the Maroons found the end zone as Vincent Cortina connected with Colin Macri for a 27-yard touchdown to cap a four-play, 59-yard scoring drive.

After each team punted on their next possession, Chicago killed an Elmhurst drive when Chris Dengler picked off Stelzriede. Elmhurst's defense forced Chicago to punt, but the Bluejays turned the ball over on downs after driving to midfield. After another Chicago punt, the Bluejays turned the ball over on downs one final time, allowing the Maroons to run out the clock.

The Bluejays ran 67 plays and totaled 246 yards of offense while Chicago finished with 234 yards of offense on 59 plays. The Bluejays struggled on third down, converting just 3-of-14 attempts. Chicago rushed for 106 yards while passing for 128.

Andrew Tubek led Elmhurst's ground attack, rushing 19 times for 95 yards. Josh Williams carried 11 times for 79 yards. Elmhurst quarterbacks Jon Pincus and Stelzriede combined to finish 10-of-32 through the air for just 61 yards and two interceptions. Will Caspers caught four passes for 22 yards.

Zak Ross-Nash led Chicago's ground game, carrying 22 imes for 70 yards. Cortina completed 12-of-20 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Wills Massie led Elmhurst's defense with 10 tackles while George DeMaria finished with seven stops.

Elmhurst opens CCIW play in two weeks by hosting North Central College on October 5.
