ELMHURST, Ill. — The Elmhurst University football team fell 28-13 to Illinois College in its season opener on Saturday afternoon at Langhorst Field.
Elmhurst (0-1) only trailed 7-0 at halftime, but a three touchdown third quarter from the Blueboys allowed Illinois College (1-0) to take control of the game.
The Bluejays responded in the fourth quarter with a 27-yard touchdown run by
Jonathan Billions. Billions totaled 82 yards on 21 carries in his collegiate debut.
Elmhurst added its second touchdown on the final play of the game when
Justin Carlson connected with
Antonio Russell for a 7-yard touchdown pass, capping a 17-play, 94-yard drive that took 6:19 off the clock.
Carlson completed 9-of-27 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
David Monteilh led the Bluejays with two receptions for 35 yards, while Russell had two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Burton led Elmhurst defensively with seven tackles.
Jace Zeffiro added six tackles, while
Jaden Genova and
Jayvon King each finished with five. King also added an interception to his stat line.
Elmhurst finished with 166 yards of total offense, including 84 rushing yards and 82 passing yards. The Bluejays converted 7-of-20 third-down opportunities and held the ball for 36:51.
Up Next: Elmhurst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Rockford University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Sam Greeley Field.
