Men's Tennis Team Finishes CCIW Season Unbeaten

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team secured the top seed in the upcoming CCIW Championships by defeating Augustana College 7-2 to finish the CCIW regular season unbeaten.

Elmhurst (12-7 overall, 5-0 CCIW) won two of the three doubles matches and took five of the six singles contests en route to the win.

Alex Harbert and Will Jung opened doubles play with an 8-3 win over Will Palmer and Andy Wall at No. 1 doubles. Augustana's Colin Arnold and Jack Cullen downed Luke Tanaka and Chris Harrison 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Elmhurst's duo of Kevin Noble and Vincent McPherson stopped Harald Olsson and Kevin Bayles 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles competition, Harbert cruised past Olsson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Jung used three sets (7-5, 3-6, 10-5) to edge Palmer at No. 2 singles. McPherson edged Wall 7-5, 7-6 at No. 3 singles. Bayles scored Augustana's only point in singles action with a three-set win (2-6, 6-3, 10-7) win over Tanaka at No. 4 singles. Jennings rallied to defeat Arnold 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles while Harrison made short work of Grant Wick at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

With the unbeaten CCIW regular season record, the Bluejays have locked up the top spot at the 2013 CCIW Championships. Elmhurst is looking for its first conference championship in men's tennis in almost 60 years. The CCIW Championships will be held on May 3-4 in Bloomington.

Elmhurst hosts Coe College on Saturday (April 27).
