ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team upended Wheaton College 6-3 to remain undefeated in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Elmhurst, ranked 15th in the latest ITA Central Region rankings, improved to 4-0 in league play while Wheaton (12-5 overall) suffered its first loss in CCIW action (4-1).
The Bluejays (11-7 overall) won two of the three doubles contests and four of the six singles matches en route to the win.
Alex Harbert and
Will Jung opened doubles play by defeating Wheaton's Ryan Kreis and Josh Ward 8-3 at No. 1 singles. Whaeton's David Buusma and Miles Greenwald edged
Luke Tanaka and
Chris Harrison 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. The Bluejays' duo of
Vincent McPherson and
Kevin Noble rolled past Derek Mumaw and John Bodett 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Harbert rallied to edge Kreis in three sets (6-7, 7-6, 6-1) at No. 1 singles. Ward needed three sets to stop Jung at No. 2 singles (7-5, 4-6, 7-6) while Buursma downed McPherson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Elmhurst closed the match by winning the final three matches. Tanaka downed Greenwald 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles while Harrison defeated Mumaw 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Quinn Jennings closed out singles competition with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bodett at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst wraps up CCIW play by traveling to Augustana College tomorrow. The Bluejays can wrap up the top-seed at the CCIW Championships with a victory.
