Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team earned its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Millikin University in four sets to capture the CCIW Tournament championship.
Elmhurst downed Millikin 25-19, 25-11, 21-25, 25-18 to record its 13th straight victory and improve to 35-4 on the season. Millikin finished the season with a 27-11 overall record.
Elmhurst used a 6-2 run early in the first set to pull out to a 10-6 lead. The Bluejays extended their lead to 14-8 and never led Millikin get closer than three points while taking the first set 25-19.
The Bluejays dominated the second set, racing out to a 5-1 lead and never looking back. Leading 13-8, the Bluejays closed the set on a 12-3 run for the easy 25-11 win. Elmhurst hit .484 for the set with 16 kills and just one error.
Millikin answered back in the third set. With the score tied at 10-10, the Big Blue rattled off six straight points to grab a 16-10 lead. The Big Blue led 22-14 before Elmhurst pulled to within three points after five straight point. The Big Blue ended the Bluejays rally and held of the Bluejays to take the set 25-21.
Elmhurst surged out in front of Millikin early in the fourth set. The Bluejays led 12-8, but Millikin pulled to within one with three straight points. Elmhurst answered back with four consecutive points to extend their lead to five. Millikin came no closer than three points as the Bluejays pulled away to take the set and the match.
Elmhurst finished the contest hitting .364 with 63 kills and 15 errors in 132 attempts. Millikin hit .199 with 50 kills and 19 errors in 156 swings.
Kaitlyn Wilks led the Bluejays' balanced attack with 15 kills and 10 digs while hitting .444.
Megan Reynolds added 10 kills and a match-high six blocks while hitting a team-leading .744.
Sam Szarmach added 13 kills for the Bluejays and
Marci Novak totaled 11 kills and a team-leading 18 digs.
Katie Rueffer totaled a team-leading 22 assists while
Hannah Nimrick finished with 16.
Hannah Lessen added 17 digs for the Bluejays. Novak was tabbed as the tournament MVP while Reynolds and Wilks also made the all-tournament team.
Audrey Krajec led Millikin in the loss with 17 kills and 11 blocks. Kelsey Talkington and Jade Becker added nine kills apiece for the Big Blue.
