ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's tennis team came up one win short in its bid for a CCIW Championship after falling 6-3 to Wheaton College in the CCIW title match.
Wheaton opened play by winning two of the three doubles matches. Elmhurst's
Alex Harbert and
Will Jung scored the Bluejays' only point in doubles play by toppling Joshua Ward and Jordan Williams 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The Thunder's Miles Greenwald and Taylor Johnson edged
Vincent McPherson and
Kevin Noble 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Wheaton's Joel Parrish and David Buursma teamed to tip
Luke Tanaka and
Justin Guenther 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Wheaton won four of the six contests to close out the victory. Harbert used three sets to defeat Johnson 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Ward followed with a three set (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) win over Jung at No. 2 singles while Williams tipped McPherson in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. Joel Parrish's 6-2, 6-4 win over Tanaka at No. 4 singles sealed the CCIW title for the Thunder. Noble added a 6-4, 6-3 win over Buursma at No. 5 singles before Greenwald toppled Guenther 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Bluejays closed out the season with a 15-9 overall record and a second-place finish in the CCIW.
