WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team suffered its first CCIW loss of the season, falling 6-3 at Wheaton College.
Elmhurst (10-5, 2-1 CCIW) entered the match ranked 13th in the region while Wheaton (10-5, 2-0 CCIW) was ranked 14th in the latest regional poll.
Wheaton won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to earn the victory.
Alex Harbert and
Will Jung accounted for all three of the Bluejays' points. Harbert and Jung combined in doubles play to stop Wheaton's Joshua Ward and Jordan Williams 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Wheaton won the remaining two doubles contests. Taylor Johnson and Miles Greenwald edged the Bluejays'
Vincent McPherson and
Luke Tanaka 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while the Thunder's Joel Parrish and David Buursma handed
Kevin Noble and
Justin Guenther an 8-5 loss at No. 3 doubles.
Harbert opened singles competition with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Johnson at No. 1 singles. Jung followed with a win at No. 2 singles by upending Ward in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-3).
Wheaton won the remaining four singles contests. Williams downed McPherson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Parrish defeated Tanaka 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Buursma handed Noble a 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 defeat at No. 5 singles and Greenwald toppled the Bluejays'
Jim White 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst faces Carroll University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday (April 15).
