Tennis Team Edges Davenport & Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. -
The Elmhurst College men's tennis team ran its record to 6-2 after edging Davenport University and Hope College in Michigan. The Bluejays scored 5-4 wins over both squads.

ELMHURST 5, DAVENPORT 4 - The Bluejays won their third match in a row with a 5-4 victory over Davenport. The two squads split the three singles matches, but the Bluejays won two of the three doubles contests to claim the victory.

In singles play, Alex Harbert toppled Vitalay Shumilov 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Will Jung suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 loss to Victor Roland at No. 2 singles. Davenport's Christian Woods upended Vincent McPherson 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Luke Tanaka scored the Bluejays a 6-0, 6-2 win over Matheus Carvalho at No. 4 singles. Kevin Noble followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Eric Pell at No. 5 singles. The Bluejays' Justin Guenther fell 7-5, 6-7, 6-10 to Davenport's Keaton Briggs at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Harbert and Jung toppled Shumilov and Roland 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Bluejays' duo of McPherson and Tanaka edged Woods and Carvalho 9-8 at No. 2 doubles. Davenport's Tyler Chambers and Pell toppled Noble and Jim White 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

ELMHURST 5, HOPE 4  - The Bluejays ran their winning streak to four by edging Hope 5-4.

Harbert and Jung scored Elmhurst's only point in doubles play, topping Bobby Cawood and Gabe Casher 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Hope's team of Kyle Kreps and Davis Vanderveen stopped Tanaka and McPherson 8-6 at No. 2 doubles while Parker Bussies and Matt Culver downed Noble and White 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

The Bluejays won the match by taking four of the six singles contests. Cawood upended Harbert 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but the Bluejays won the next four contests. Jung defeated Bussies 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles while McPherson got past Kreps 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3 singles. Tanaka downed Cody Herbuck 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while Noble followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Culver at No. 5 singles. Hope's Jon Panzer defeated Guenther 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Elmhurst plays three matches in Orlando, Fla. on March 19-21.
