ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's tennis team opened the 2012 season with an 8-1 victory over Cornell College at Courts Plus.
The Bluejays swept all three doubles matches and scored wins at five of the six singles' matches en route to the eight-point win.
Alex Harbert opened singles play with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Garrett Russikoff at No. 1 singles.
Will Jung followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ashan DeSliva at No. 2 singles while
Vincent McPherson upended Justin Bradfield 6-3, 6-1 No. 3 singles.
Cornell scored its only point of the meet at No. 4 singles when Orion Wilkinson edged
David Devaney in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 11-9).
Luke Tanaka knocked off Joseph Gelfand 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and
Kevin Noble made his Elmhurst debut with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ben Williamson at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, the Bluejays' team of Harbert and Jung defeated Bradfield and Wilkinson 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, McPherson and Tanaka combined to defeat Russikof and Neal Klauer 8-6. Elmhurst's duo of Devaney and Noble added an 8-3 win over DeSilva and Joseph Reyes at No. 3 doubles.
Elmhurst plays at the University of Chicago on Saturday (February 4).
