BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's tennis team doubled up Wheaton College 6-3 to place third at the 2011 CCIW Championship.
The Bluejays posted a 2-1 dual record at the championship to finish the year with a 12-11 overall record.
Elmhurst swept all three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Will Jung and
Vincent McPherson used a 7-4 tiebreaker to edge Wheaton's Corey Chan and Miles Greenwald 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.
Alex Harbert and
David Devaney downed Wheaton's Taylor Johnson and Stephan Rauh 9-7 at No. 2 doubles.
Jim White and
Eric Moss defeated the Thunder's pair of Joel Parrish and David Buursma 9-8 using a 7-3 tiebreaker.
Elmhurst and Wheaton split the six singles matches to give Elmhurst the 6-3 victory. Harbert downed Johnson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and Jung followed with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) come-from-behind win over Rauh at No. 2 singles. Parrish needed three sets to edge Devaney 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Thunder. McPherson scored the Bluejays' final point with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Buursma at No. 4 singles. Miles Greenwald upended White 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Sam Cannon defeated
Justin Guenther 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst returns all but one senior for the 2012 season.
