BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's tennis team was on both the winning and losing side of a pair of 5-4 decisions at the CCIW Championship. The sixth-seeded Bluejays started the day by upsetting third-seeded North Central College 5-4 before falling to second-seeded Augustana College 5-4 in the semifinals.

ELMHURST 5, NORTH CENTRAL 4 - The Bluejays upended the Cardinals 5-4 to advance to the semifinal round of the CCIW Championship.

Elmhurst took two of the three doubles contests and the two squads split the six singles matches to give Elmhurst the 5-4 win.

Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-1 lead by scoring a pair of wins in doubles play. North Central's duo of Sam Sweeney and Matt Boguslawski blanked Elmhurst's Will Jung and Vincent McPherson 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Elmhurst's Alex Harbert and David Devaney dispatched Boris Kampel and Eric Mutka 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Elmhurst's Jim White and Eric Moss earned a thrilling 9-8 victory over Eric McKee and Josh Clay at No. 3 doubles. White and Moss scored the win with a 7-6 decision in the tiebreaker.

In singles play, Sweeney scored the Cardinals a point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Harbert at No. 1 singles. Devaney knocked off Chris Bennorth 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while McPherson downed McKee 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Clay scored the Cardinals a win by defeating Justin Guenther 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

The match came down to a pair of singles contests. Kampel evened the score at 4-4 by upending White  3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Jung used a third set tiebreaker to  defeat Boguslawski at No. 2 singles and give Elmhurst the win. Jung earned the victory by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 score. He won the third set tiebreaker 11-9.

AUGUSTANA 5, ELMHURST 4 - Elmhurst started with a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but Augustana won four of the six singles matches to earn the one-point win.

Jung and McPherson downed Adam DeSimone and Andy Wall 8-5 at No.1 doubles while Harbert and Devaney downed Kyle Doyle and Nik Lehnert 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. Augustana's Jack Cullen and Colin Arnold downed White and Moss 8-2 at No. 3 doubles to give Augustana a point.

In singles play, Harbert downed DeSimone 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles while Guenther toppled Cullen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Augustana's Lehnert downed Devaney 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Arnold downed Dean Leventis 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Vikings used a pair of three-set wins to earn the victory. Doyle downed Jung 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to knot the score at 4-4. Wall rallied from a set down to edge McPherson 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 4 singles to give the Vikings the win.

Elmhurst will play fourth-seeded Wheaton College in the third-place match on Saturday, May 7.
