Men's Tennis Team Topples Cente 8-1

The Elmhurst College men's tennis team cruised past Centre College 8-1 to improve to 7-4 on the 2011 season.

Elmhurst won five of the six singles contests and swept all three doubles matches en route to the seven-point victory.

Alex Harbert upended Ben Newstadt 6-2, 6-2 at  No. 1 singles. Centre scored its only point of the match at No. 2 singles when Xan Witherington downed Will Jung 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. David Devaney scored a win for Elmhurst at No. 3 singles by stopping Richard Rumble 6-1, 6-1. Vincent McPherson followed with a 7-6, 1-6, 11-9 victory over Andrew Howard at No. 4 singles. Jim White added a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kit Beunner at No. 5 singles and Dean Leventis closed out singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Matt Doss at No. 6 singles.

In doubles action, Devaney and Jung edged Newstadt and Witherington 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. McPherson and Harbert combined to defeat Rumbled and Howard 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. White and Eric Moss teamed to toppled Beunner and Doss 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
