ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team started its 2010 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Elmhurst College Invitational. The Bluejays opened the day with a 3-2 loss to the University of Chicago, but bounced back to blank Gustavus Adolphus College 3-0.
CHICAGO 3, ELMHURST 2 - Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Chicago rallied back to win three straight sets and take the match 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-8.
The Bluejays never trailed in the opening two sets, opening up a five-point lead in the first and a seven-point advantage in the second.
Chicago led from start to finish in the third set, leading by as many as seven points in the process. The Maroons broke open a 3-3 tie in the fourth set by scoring nine straight points and cruising to the 25-17 win.
In the fifth and decisive set, Chicago jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, allowing Elmhurst to only close to within a point before finishing the come-from-behind victory.
Paige Fombelle led the Bluejays in the loss. Fombelle totaled 13 kills and a whopping 16 blocks in the loss.
Meghan Mullaney added 10 kills and eight digs while
Melissa Miehlke finished with seven kills and 11 digs.
Jameela Chaudhry added 11 digs while
Katie Rueffer totaled 22 assists.
Erin Thill added 14 assists in the loss.
ELMHURST 3, GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS 0 - Elmhurst bounced back from its opening loss by shutting out Gustavus Adolphus College 25-18, 25-16, 25-15.
After racing out to a 2-0 lead, the Bluejays put the match out of reach by jumping out to a 7-0 advantage in the third and final set.

Katie Kasper and
Megan Reynolds finished with six kills apiece to pace the Bluejays' attack. Reynolds finished with a .545 hitting percentage, totaling six kills and no errors in 11 attempts. Chaudhry led the team with 16 digs while Miehlke recorded six. Rueffer led the squad in assists with 10 while Thill totaled nine.
Elmhurst faces Trine University and Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on the tournament's second day.
