Men's Tennis Team Finishes 2-1 at Hilton Head

The Elmhurst College men's tennis team upped its 2010 record to 3-4 after posting a 2-1 mark on its spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

After suffering a 9-0 loss to Hope College, the Bluejays bounced back to defeat Franklin College (7-2) and Hartwick College (5-4).

HOPE 9, ELMHURST 0 - Hope blanked Elmhurst 9-0 by sweeping all six singles matches and all three doubles contests.

Elmhurst's No. 1 doubles team of David Devaney and Dave Douglass dropped a 9-7 decision to Hope's John Gardner and Bobby Cawood in the closest match of the day. 

ELMHURST 7, FRANKLIN 2 - Elmhurst rebounded from its loss to Hope by upending Franklin College 7-2. The Bluejays swept all six singles contests while Franklin scored wins in two of the three doubles matches.

Douglass scored a 1-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over Franklin's Matt Hamm at No. 1 singles while Devaney followed with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Nate Kelly at No. 2 singles. Elmhurst's Dean Leventis downed Blake Warehem 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Justin Guenther downed Justin Smith 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 4 singles. Jim White (6-3, 6-1 over Jordan Moran) and Eric Moss (6-1, 6-2 over Cory Bugan) scored wins for Elmhurst at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. 

Moss and Leventis combined to defeat Warehem and Moran 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. 

ELMHURST 5, HARTWICK 4 - Elmhurst finished its spring break trip by edging Hartwick College 5-4. The two squads split the six singles matches, but Elmhurst won two out of three doubles contests to score the dual victory. 

Devaney downed Marcelo Navarro 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 singles while White defeated Matt Whitty 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5 singles. Moss scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sunil Mickelson at No. 6 singles to account for Elmhurst's third point in singles competition. 

In doubles play, Moss and Leventis scored a 9-7 win over Navarro and Whitty at No. 2 doubles. White and Guenther teamed up for an 8-1 win over Sean Barr and Mickelson at No. 3 doubles. 

Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on April 6.
