Volleyball Team Finishes Invite With 2-2 Record

ELMHURST, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College volleyball team closed out the final day of the Elmhurst  Invitational by splitting a pair of matches. The Bluejays posted a 2-2 record at the two-day tournament.

Elmhurst (13-14 overall) began the tournament's second day hammering Greensboro College 3-0 before falling 3-2 in the tournament's final match to Simpson College.

ELMHURST 3, GREENSBORO 0 - The Bluejays dispatched Greensboro 25-11, 25-17, 25-10 to open play on the second day of the Elmhurst Invitational. Caitlin O'Hara recorded eight kills in 11 attempts, hitting a whopping .727 in the process. O'Hara also added four blocks in the victory. Lisa Burger chipped in with six kills while Lindy Melville led the squad in assists with 15. Erin Thill tallied 11 assists while Paige Fombelle led the team in blocks with six. Melissa Miehlke recorded three kills and a team-leading three service aces while Katie Buechel recorded nine digs.

SIMPSON 3, ELMHURST 2 - The Bluejays closed out the tournament with a five-set loss to Simpson, falling to the Storm 19-25, 28-26, 27-25, 15-25, 10-15.

After dropping the first set, the Bluejays edged the Storm in the next two sets to grab a 2-1 lead. Simpson battled back to take the fourth set 25-15 and force a decisive fifth set. After an early Elmhurst lead, the Storm battled back to take the set 15-10 and earn the match victory.

O'Hara pounded down 11 kills and registered five blocks to lead the Bluejays. Antonéya Veasy Smith added nine kills while Burger, Fombelle and Miehlke totaled six kills apiece. Melville led the team in assists with 23 while Thill totaled 14. Buechel led the squad defensively, registering 26 digs in the loss.

O'Hara was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 45 kills over the four matches.

Elmhurst plays at Augustana College on Tuesday, October 20.
