ELMHURST, Ill. - Taking three tight doubles matches keyed the Elmhurst men's tennis team's fourth straight victory, an 8-1 win over North Central.Â
The teams battled during doubles play as neither team led by more than three games at any point. After being down an early break,
Alex Abbuhl and
Ricardo Franco broke serve at 6-5 and served out an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
Justin Delawder and
Kyle Endicott earned the next point for the Bluejays with an 8-6 win at No. 3. Trailing 6-3 (two breaks) at No. 1,
Chris Harrison and
Quinn Jennings stormed back to force the match to a tiebreaker. The Elmhursst duo completed the sweep by taking the final five points of the tiebreaker to win 9-8(2).Â
In singles play, Abbuhl quickly found the fourth point for Elmhurst with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. The rest of the matches were much tighter as the Bluejays searched for the fifth and decisive point. Franco put the finishing touches on his match 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the Bluejays' win.Â
After falling in a quick first set 6-0, Endicott battled back to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-3 to win his match in three sets. After serving for the first set at 5-4, Harrison's opponent Victor Krueger broke him to even at 5-5. Harrison earned himself another chance to serve for the match at 6-5 and grabbed at the opportunity, winning the final eight games of the match for a 7-5, 6-0 victory.Â
North Central earned its only point at No. 6 as Tyler Bussell defeated Delawder 6-4, 6-4. Elmhurst's final point came from Jennings 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.Â
Elmhurst looks to keep its win streak alive when they host Augustana this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in what will be the Bluejays' final home match of the season.Â
